The first podcast from New York City and one of the first Indie Music Podcasts to hit the scene - Tracks Up the Tree has been reviewed "Out of all the music podcasts I've listened to, this is the first one that has played music that I universally liked" by the New Podcast Review. Adopting the unique stance of only playing music from artists websites who make their tracks available online, Tracks Up the Tree is podcast semi-live from Brooklyn NY and delivers the best indie music to be found on the internet.
[...] I figure most people are familiar with lead singer, Ted Leo (well, maybe not everybody), but it seems like most are much less familiar with Chisel. For a couple years in 1996-1997 they were a realitively heavily hyped band out of the D.C. scene, and I was a huge fan. I think of them as having a pop-punk/garage rock sound with some Beatles harmonies thrown in. I was really disappointed to hear of their demise, just after the release of their 2nd album, Set You Free. Leo never quite grabbed in his post-Chisel bands, first The Sin-Eaters and later as The Pharmacists, and I attribute a big part of this to the chemistry that Chisel had as a three-piece, particularly to Chris Norborg’s bass and harmonies. It’s hard to pick out favorites, because the songs I liked the most live I liked the least on record and vice-versa. But check them out, because they’re all good. [...]

I'll jump in here to say the Ruy Lopez show didn't make the cut either. I suspected it was because of all our Lenlow mashups. I would guess that they had too many subscriptions, but it seems the directory is growing daily (I gauge this by scanning through and counting the red "Explicit" notifications. On the first day of the directory there was only 1: Dawn and Drew).

Great show by the way. I love hearing the different styles between FTB and Seth. The dream show would be Ben, Seth, Jess, Josiah and Funtime Diane all together.

I was surprised to find Jump Cut Radio already listed...and I play movie clips and music without getting permission! Go figure.

Hey, Ben, I got some more questions about your mic setup, etc. How do you hook the microphones up to the computer? I'm assuming you're on a Mac, right? I've been using the internal mics on both my iBook and my folks' eMac and I'm searchin' for alternatives with somewhat better audio quality.

Yes, the whole iTunes podcast directory shennanigans is something I'm watching very closely. I think the following things are happening:

1. They're being ultra-conservative about letting music based podcasts in because of the Supreme Court Grokster ruling the other day.
2. Blogosphere chatter seems to suggest that curry.com had a download meltdown and that Apple are trying to sort out some 'feed' problem. Details are sketchy.
3. They would have had a MASSIVE amount of feed submissions over the last week. Easily in the several thousands.

I've submitted mine but I did it through the UK itunes store which means they'll probably sit on it for several months before reviewing. :) I probably should have done it via the US one. To be honest, I'm not holding out much hope for mine being approved as I really don't think they have anyway of determining what's copyrighted or not. Both you and I play music by bands with reasonably big names that have submitted their music into the public domain and I think this will confuse the vetters. They'll err on the side of caution and won't bother to verify whether that track is legally in the public domain.

Guardian blog posting on podcasting and grokster ruling here:

Keep up the great work Ben......2500+ subscribers? So it's your podcast bringing the Libsyn servers down every fortnight? ;)

Well, here's the rub Andy, Tracks has been entered, but it seems like the folks at iTunes have a problem with the show and have not entered it into their show directory... this is the first time it's happened to my knowledge so I'm a little confused, considering others I have been involved with, that share my pirate audio licensing ideals are included (notably Notes from the Underground). But as it stands I guess we'll just have to see how this issue progresses. I don't want to rock the boat for everybody.

In other news:

I have officially hacked WordPress to stop enclosing MP3s in my posts and am working diligently on a "disable enclosures" plug-in for podcasetr's that will allow Wordpress users to include any podcasts they want and remove the one's they don't. Stay tunned.

Re: Raff's trackback

This was the very, very first thing I downloaded with iTunes 4.9. See how much you are loved? :)

Unfortunately, Tracks does not appear in the iTunes Podcasting Directory (hereafter referred to as ITPD). You should go enter it, and share the love. It looks really simple. All you need to do is load up the new iTunes, click on "Podcasts" in the left-hand column, click "Podcast Directory" at the bottom of the list, and when you get to the front page, click "Publish a Podcast" on the left.

On a completely different note...

I noticed that you actually have the mp3 links *in* the post! How did you do it? Has WP fixed the "I'm gonna make everything an enclosure" problem, or are using some kind of hack or plugin?

Lastly...

Really great show, as per usual. I'm actually glad Josia or Diane *weren't* there. It probably would have been too much too take. Too much funtime. I would have pissed myself laugh, most likely, as oposed to just just choking on my coffee a few times.
